Agreement for future of stadium

Stadio Renzo Barbera has once again become a focal point. The venue, home to Palermo FC for many years, is now in urgent need of modernization. Both the city authorities and the club have expressed full agreement on the stadium’s future, and recent statements from Mayor Roberto Lagalla and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi point to real prospects for a major overhaul.

During recent meetings between city representatives and Palermo FC’s management, an agreement was reached to launch the most urgent renovation works. Mayor Lagalla confirmed that the city administration has already secured €3 million for the necessary interventions. These funds will be used for improvements required by the Football League to obtain the certifications needed for the continued use of the stadium.

While awaiting the renewal of the stadium concession, we will work together with the club to ensure the necessary adaptations to the venue, in preparation for the 2025–26 football season and in accordance with the League's schedule Lagalla announced.

Among the key steps already taken is the signing of the stadium's structural fitness certificate. This document, approved by engineer Giovanni Cascio, confirms that the stadium is not at risk of closure due to structural deficiencies. Thanks to recent inspections and technical interventions, the venue on Viale del Fante can continue to host fans and matches without safety concerns.

Ministry of Sport backs investment

The entire project gained additional significance with the presence of Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, who attended the presentation of the Palermo Hub Network at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa complex. The meeting with club representatives and local authorities provided an opportunity to discuss the stadium’s future in a broader context – not only local but national as well.

The opportunities stem from the commitment of both the municipality and Palermo FC, which has been demonstrated repeatedly. We are confident that Palermo, with or without Euro 2032, deserves a modern, accessible stadium that matches the ambitions of the club and the city said Abodi.

The minister also emphasized that the process is irreversible, meaning that national authorities will support local efforts to upgrade sports infrastructure, regardless of future decisions regarding tournament hosting. Although the stadium concession agreement still awaits official renewal, all parties agree that work should not be delayed. According to the announcements, modernization efforts are set to begin as soon as possible.
