Madrid derby made life difficult for residents

This concern was voiced by Virgilio Mata, spokesperson for the Las Musas-Las Rosas Neighborhood Association, during a plenary session of the San Blas-Canillejas district. He emphasized that the presence of the stadium in the area has led to social changes and significantly impacted the lives of residents. The association criticized the incidents that occur near Riyadh Air Metropolitano every time an event takes place there. One example highlighted was the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid on March 12.

For an hour and a half, plus extra time, all residents had to endure shouting, objects being thrown, and insults. We have a problem, and we demand solutions. The living conditions of those who moved here 20 years ago have completely changed, the spokesperson stressed. Mata pointed out that many residents felt overwhelmed that day, as cars were parked on sidewalks, making it difficult for baby strollers and disabled individuals to pass. Some residents could not even leave or enter their garages.

Additionally, he called for measures to prevent non-residents from occupying parking spaces, sometimes even the day before an event. He also demanded the protection of residents' right to rest and stricter enforcement of regulations against public disturbances.

District authorities promise action to improve the situation

District councilor-president Almudena Maíllo responded by stating that she fully understands residents' concerns about the March 12 match. She recalled that it was classified as a high-risk event, which led security forces to implement exceptional measures. However, she emphasized that not all matches at the stadium are considered high-risk. In this case, incidents occurred in Plaza Grecia, which connects to the M-40 highway. A total of 108 fines were issued for traffic violations, and two vehicles were towed. Additionally, six inspections were conducted, resulting in 17 fines.

Maíllo stressed that high-risk matches are not a frequent occurrence in this district and assured residents that future improvements would be made to enhance stadium access and minimize the impact on their daily lives. This was an isolated incident, but I understand that it was inconvenient for residents. These are isolated cases that should be treated as such, and we will continue strengthening measures to minimize neighborhood disruptions, concluded the councilor-president.
