WORLD CUP 2030: Money or prestige - Atletico consider letting go of the World Cup Atletico Madrid are facing a dilemma: either millions from gigs or World Cup prestige. The Rojiblancos' resignation from the tournament would be the ideal option for Valencia and the head of the Spanish federation, but the situation is far from simple. Atleti's place could also be taken by Vigo or even... Real Betis.

Fulfilled prediction

One of the eleven hosts would be able to give up its place to be taken by Valencia, Rafael Louzán, president of the Spanish federation (RFEF), revealed at the end of January. There was immediate speculation that it was about one of the two candidates that are having problems with their projects - Malaga or A Coruña. To everyone's surprise, it was revealed that this host is Atletico Madrid.

In a very generous gesture, they would even be willing, if necessary, to give up their place so that Valencia would be one of the eleven Spanish hosts, Louzán said on Wednesday, confirming information that had appeared a few hours earlier in the press. The announcement has fuelled hopes in Valencia. The club and the city are hoping that the announcements will come to fruition and Nou Mestalla will replace Estadio Metropolitano for the 2030 World Cup.

Either the World Cup or the millions

Contrary to the words of the RFEF president, Atletico are not considering this option out of the goodness of their hearts, but for financial reasons. FIFA requires it to have exclusive access to stadiums one month before the first match and one week after the last. And this means that the club will not be able to hold summer concerts for two months. According to Relevo, this translates into around €20M in losses.

On the other hand, hosting the World Cup carries a lot of prestige. The pride of the Rojiblancos could be hurt if Bernabéu hosts the final or the opening match and the Metropolitano does not see a single clash between the world's best national teams.

Although a decision is yet to be made, Valencia faces a unique opportunity. The support of the federation and government, and the similar capacity of the Nou Mestalla and Metropolitano position the city as a natural substitute for Rojiblancos’ bid. However, Vigo will also be vying for their place at the 2030 World Cup. Even Betis can prove to be a rival, as its president offered a few days ago to the RFEF president that the new Benito Villamarin be included in the list of stadiums for the upcoming tournament.
