First stage of Beaver Stadium's revitalisation
The renovation work will focus primarily on the west side of the stadium. The first phase began after the 2024 season with the demolition of the press box and the removal of the upper deck and several above-ground structures. In May 2024, Penn State's Board of Trustees officially approved the investment, which aims to make Beaver Stadium suitable for year-round use. The project will ensure funding for all 31 Penn State athletics programmes and contribute to the region's economic development.
During the renovation work, 800 to 1,000 workers will be employed on the project, with up to 450 people employed daily at the peak of the project. The project will generate $15 million in economic impact for the region. What is more, 75% of the materials and labour used in the first phase came from Pennsylvania, which shows Penn State's commitment to local development.

Populous presents the project
Populous, an international company specialising in the design of sports and entertainment facilities, is responsible for the architectural design. The construction management is being carried out by a consortium of Barton Malow, AECOM Hunt and Alexander Construction, with the Nations Group as a key consultant. These companies have already worked together on numerous sports projects over the past 20 years.
Jonathan Kelley, Senior Director at Populous, emphasises that the project is based on the history and tradition of the Penn State programme: For the past 18 months, our team at Populous has worked in close collaboration with Penn State and all our partners to revitalize Beaver Stadium in State College. With a design based on the history and traditions of an amazing program and venue, we are thrilled to see the transformed west side of the stadium emerging from the ground, soon to provide a remarkable game day experience for fans.

Sustainability, LEED certification and new seating options
The modernisation of the stadium aims to improve the fan experience on match days. The revitalisation will include new toilets and catering facilities, an improved Wi-Fi connection with 135 new access points, a doubling of the space on the west side of the stadium and the addition of new escalators, lifts and pedestrian ramps. The stadium lighting system will also be modernised. A new video screen will be installed in the north stand, and LED boards will be installed on the west side of the stadium. Out of concern for the environment, the project will meet the highest standards of energy efficiency. Penn State is committed to obtaining LEED certification, which means using environmentally friendly solutions in the construction and operation of the stadium.
The revitalised west side of the stadium will offer a variety of seating options. As many as 75% of them will be standard seats, intended for the general public. The project also includes premium areas, including suites and exclusive spaces such as the 6,100 square metre Schuyler Family Club, the 10,700 square metre Marzano Club and modern VIP boxes. These facilities will be available for private events throughout the year.
