Spain: "A mockery, a fraud." No progress visible at Nou Mestalla

30 months and not a day more. Although the work schedule is extremely tight and restrictive, the Nou Mestalla construction site shows neither machinery nor signs of progress. The opposition accuses the club of mocking the city and the authorities of complicity in the fraud, and clearly states that "sending one worker is not a resumption of work."

"Mockery" or schedule?
Everyone will understand that this is not the resumption of work [...] it's a mockery, Lim’s scam,
stated Papi Robles, spokeswoman for the Compromis opposition party, in a press release on Wednesday. For Robles, who believes that sending a single worker does not mean construction has begun
, the silence from the city hall is strange. What pact have you made?,
she asked, accusing Mayor María José Catalá of putting the interests of Peter Lim above those of the people of Valencia.
And although the first crane appeared on the construction site of the Nou Mestalla this week, the fact is that after more than a month there is no progress. However, this is not due to the abandonment of the work, but to the schedule. According to the plan presented last October, from January 10, when workers returned to the construction site, until mid-September 2025, preliminary work
will carry on.

Margin of error: 0
This category includes site preparation for the construction site and, most importantly, repair of the structure, exposed for 15 years to weather conditions. Before the actual work begins, workers must remove rust from metal components, repair cracks or reinforce the structure. Once they finish, the schedule will get far more intense:
- May 21, 2025 - start of architectural work inside the stadium
- December 29, 2025 - start of work on the canopy
- February 10, 2026 - start of work on the facade
- July 11, 2027 - handover of the finished stadium
Deadlines are extremely tight. According to the plan, many of the works - such as finishing the facade, equipping the stadium and preparing the entrances - will last until the last day, even during rehearsals or inspections. Such a schedule does not leave the contractor, the Spanish company FCC, much room for error.
