Stadium must keep up with the team’s unexpected success
The modernization seems essential for the club’s development, especially if the goal is to regularly qualify for European competitions, which is a challenge this season. The idea for a new stadium is clear, and the project will soon be presented to the fans and the city
, explained the president in an interview with Televisió de Girona, referring to the project that was fast-tracked last season due to the excellent performance of Míchel's team, which qualified for the Champions League.
Girona plays in Europe’s top league with Montilivi’s capacity at just 9,000 spectators, as UEFA imposed a restriction that prevents the addition of temporary stands. If the team qualifies for international competitions again next season, the club will face the same problem due to the inability to quickly rebuild their stadium. Girona has a contract with the city allowing them to use the current stadium until 2068, which includes a gradual modernization plan with significant improvements and an increase in the capacity of all stands. The timeline for these works has been accelerated due to the team’s recent successes.

Modernization or relocation?
If the club opts for a redevelopment of Montilivi, it will need to find a temporary stadium. Girona’s leaders are carefully analyzing every step to make the right decision. The first option is still the modernization of Montilivi,
said Delfí Geli. We are waiting to see if architects can solve the structural challenges to create a functional and sustainable stadium.
