Italy: Mayor favors Lazio's project? Clear reaction from Roma Nouto A few days ago, the mayor of Rome expressed his support for Lazio’s proposal to modernize the Stadio Flaminio. "I think the Flaminio stadium project is beautiful and worthy of support. We are currently in the technical phase, which our offices are already working on," he stated.

The National Anti-Corruption Authority to investigate

These words didn’t sit well with the backers of the competing proposal to redevelop the Stadio Flaminio, Roma Nouto. After hearing the mayor’s comments, the group decided to alert the National Anti-Corruption Authority (Anac). They argued that an openness to Lazio’s project while two competing plans are under review could lead to unlawful actions of interest to Anac. This was outlined in a formal document requesting verification of the fairness of the redevelopment process for Flaminio.

The city rejects the accusations

The city administration quickly responded. City Hall stated that it strictly follows all procedures and that Roma Capitale is required to evaluate all submitted proposals. The municipality will then have the right to choose between the projects based on public interest.

Roma Nouto's project gets the green light. Will it also earn public interest status?

As for the Services Conference, Roma Nuoto received a favorable opinion in December, albeit with some recommendations from the Superintendent and the Department of Mobility, which the planners claim to have addressed. The project, initially submitted in 2020, has undergone two evaluations—the most recent in 2024—following an appeal by Roma Nuoto to the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio. The proposal envisions transforming Flaminio into a multi-sport facility. The underground section would house an Olympic-sized swimming pool, four padel courts, and an ice rink. The grass field would be used for women’s football and rugby matches.

After receiving the green light from the Services Conference, Roma Nuoto must now achieve another critical milestone: public interest status. Only one project can be granted this recognition, which heightens the pressure. The mayor’s repeated support for Lazio’s plan, recently reiterated in Palazzo Senatorio, has caused frustration. Lazio, too, is growing impatient, as Lotito is eager to know the status of the process so the project can be brought before the Capitoline Assembly. However, the city plans to evaluate all proposals before making a decision.
