"We need to think big"

During an event at the renovated Palasport di Genova, Genoa Mayor Pietro Piciocchi stressed the importance of Stadio Luigi Ferraris in the city's development plans. We are on the right track, he said. The relationship between the two clubs and the promotion company is intensifying and I hope that we will soon be able to present the work with a specific timeframe for the city.

At the same time, he pointed out that the project is not just about upgrading the stadium. However, it's not just about the stadium itself, but rather a major redevelopment of the Marassi district. We have to think big: it has to become a showpiece for our city he added.

Euro 2032 as an overarching goal

Genoa aspires to host the European Championships in 2032, which requires bringing the sporting infrastructure and public spaces up to the highest standards. Piciocchi pointed out that the project to upgrade the Stadio Luigi Ferraris has received strong support from the Minister of Sport, which gives hope that the plans will be implemented in time.

The Euro requires a different organisation of the outdoor space. In any case, even without the European Championships, there will be a comprehensive redevelopment of the Marassi the mayor explained. I am committed to reporting on the steps forward, it will certainly be a breakthrough he added.

Waterfront di Levante and big plans for 2025

Genoa's vision for change goes beyond Marassi. The city's eastern waterfront, known as the Waterfront di Levante, is the second key revitalisation project. The year 2025 will be a turning point said Piciocchi.

A new public space, including a park, plazas and commercial facilities, is being created on the site of the former fairgrounds. The Foce park, which will be the site of the inauguration of Euroflora, is scheduled for completion by May 2025. In turn, a number of activities are envisaged at Palasport, the sports facilities and the newly created Idea Factory by Renzo Piano to further the public and commercial use of the space.
