Victoria Stadium makes history in shadow of controversy

Victoria Stadium, located on Winston Churchill Avenue, has served as Gibraltar's premier sporting venue. It will now be demolished as part of an ambitious modernisation project. The proposal also includes the demolition of the former CEPSA petrol station, the AquaGib pumping station and smaller structures such as the popular Murga Bar, three kiosks inside the stadium and adjacent warehouses.

The decision-making process was not without its tensions. Allan Asquez, owner of Murga Bar, tried to block the demolition, arguing that his family and employees have depended on the business for 25 years. However, the Development and Planning Commission (DPC) rejected his request to defer the decision. Speaking to local media, a spokesman for the Gibraltar government described the owner's expectations as unreasonable. The conflict, despite attempts at negotiation, ended with the decision to start work immediately, which is expected to start in May 2025.

New National Stadium

The planned New National Stadium of Gibraltar, which received preliminary approval last March, is set to be a key sports venue on the Bay of Gibraltar. The facility will hold 8,000 spectators and will feature modern sports facilities, retail, office and residential spaces. In addition to sporting events, the stadium will be able to host music concerts and other major cultural events.

The new stadium, as required by UEFA, will be able to host both matches of the Gibraltar national team and teams participating in European competitions. Although the project has been welcomed by the sporting community, some residents have expressed concerns about increased traffic and potential environmental problems during construction. The authorities have assured that they will implement appropriate measures to minimise the impact on the lives of residents. The project will be implemented in accordance with strict environmental regulations, which is expected to limit disruption. The project will be financed by a consortium of Gibraltar banks, which plans the subsequent commercialisation of the facility. The stadium will also act as a community hub, combining sporting, cultural and commercial functions.
