Cadiz stadium name debate

The name of the city's main football stadium, Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla, has been hotly debated in Cadiz for months. The name change, which was intended to disassociate itself from a figure associated with the Franco regime, Ramón de Carranza, has once again sparked controversy. At the centre of the debate are the different perspectives of the local community, Cádiz CF supporters and the municipal authorities.

As of the end of 2024, there is still a dispute over the name of the Cadiz stadium. In the new year, fans will still face uncertainty, and many of them, instead of worrying about matters related to their favorite team, will turn to online activities. The Deputy Mayor of Cadiz for Democratic Memory, José Manuel Cossi, recently issued a statement explaining the City Council's stance on the issue. In this City Council there was one vision and only one vision on this issue until 2023. That vision was that Carranza refers to Ramón de Carranza and nothing else, a historical figure linked to the Civil War and Franco's repression, which, as we said, does not comply with the Law of Democratic Memory. Under Spain's law, the use of the name was incompatible with current legislation.

In 2023, in line with the new approach, the name of the Ramón de Carranza Trophy was changed to the neutral Carranza Trophy. This decision was meant to be a symbolic step towards legal compliance, but, as Cossi stressed, the stadium name issue requires a more complex analysis.

Social visions versus democratic law

On the one hand, part of the local community, including Cádiz CF fans, see the name Carranza as an element of collective memory and a symbol of the stadium with which they associate memories and emotions. On the other hand, for many the reference to Ramón de Carranza's name is clearly associated with fascism and violates democratic values.

Cossi stressed that the municipal authorities are currently studying the application submitted by Cádiz CF to restore the name Estadio Carranza. The dossier is to take into account all points of view, both technical and social. A decision will only be taken once a detailed analysis of compliance with current legislation has been completed.

The Secretary General of the PSOE in Cadiz, José Ramón Ortega, also joined the debate. Criticising Mayor Bruno García, Ortega accused him of being inconsistent and warned that an attempt to restore the name Carranza could violate both state and regional law. Bruno García led the attempt to change the name, which violated state and regional democratic memory laws, and now his own deputy mayor is warning him against it said Ortega.

Ortega stressed that the municipal authorities should focus on the city's current problems, such as cleanliness, public transport or housing, instead of creating controversy around a figure associated with dark pages of history. Instead, he proposed that the stadium be named after a commercial sponsor, which would benefit local sports clubs and young people.
