Spain: A key step toward beginning Coliseum modernization Getafe continues to push for construction work on the Coliseum to begin as soon as possible. On Monday, the city’s mayor, Sara Hernández, confirmed that last week the club submitted a license application that incorporates changes, focusing on parking.

Getafe sought to eliminate the requirement for building a large parking lot

The initial application for the license was submitted by Getafe in March. The €47 million project is to be financed through an investment fund. The documents were reviewed efficiently by technicians and received positive feedback in September, but one issue remained unresolved. The proposal did not include plans for a parking lot with enough spaces proportional to the planned increase in Coliseum’s capacity. The stadium’s capacity will increase by 3,500 seats, which means the club is required to provide one parking space for every five spectators—700 spaces in total.

Getafe considered alternatives to address the logistical challenges of constructing such a large parking facility. In recent weeks, the club worked on solutions, and the mayor confirmed that proposals were submitted as part of efforts to remove this requirement. The City Council supported the idea of adopting a sustainable mobility solution, arguing that additional parking spaces would attract more cars to the area. The Getafe Norte neighborhood already experiences congestion during events held every two weeks at the stadium, so officials decided to waive the parking requirement provided that the club implements measures to promote sustainable mobility.

The club and City Council found a joint solution

It was only last Thursday that the club presented a set of proposals supporting this approach. Ultimately, Getafe committed to installing six electric vehicle chargers, building ten bike parking spaces, and promoting the use of public transportation. If everything goes according to plan, the construction license for Coliseum Getafe could be approved in January, allowing Getafe to move on to the next stage, bringing the start of construction closer.
