A long-awaited project

Bluenergy Stadium, already recognized as one of the most modern and eco-friendly stadiums in Italy, regularly hosts over 150 major events annually, including Italian national football and rugby matches as well as large concerts. Udine Mayor Alberto Felice De Toni explained that the Stadio 2.0 project had been delayed for years due to bureaucratic obstacles. Thanks to collaboration between the Municipality and Udinese Calcio, these challenges have now been overcome.

The Mayor expressed special thanks to his deputy, Venanzi, and councilor Scalettaris for their dedication to the project. De Toni emphasized that the stadium is one of the city's key assets, and with this new project, it will become one of the most advanced complexes in Europe, accessible to both fans and residents.

Overcoming bureaucratic hurdles

The Stadio 2.0 project, which dates back to 2017, followed the main phase of modernization of the Stadio Friuli, a €40 million investment. Udinese later proposed an additional €17 million plan. A major challenge arose from the risk of restarting the approval process under the Service Conference framework, which could have significantly delayed progress. However, a breakthrough came when Udinese proposed a general resolution by the City Council, aligning with the existing Urban Planning Scheme. This avoided prolonged procedures and gave new momentum to the project.

Renewed cooperation between the municipality and Udinese Calcio, supported by legal experts specializing in administrative law, finally resolved the impasse. A resolution was passed recognizing the project’s compliance with land-use requirements, including non-sporting purposes, which was crucial for advancing the initiative.

A multifunctional hub for the community

This decision has paved the way for the realization of the Stadio 2.0 project, transforming the stadium into a multifunctional venue open year-round. The redevelopment plan includes retail spaces, restaurants, coworking and office spaces, conference centers, a sports museum, a hotel area, a music school with concert halls, fitness and wellness facilities, and a medical center specializing in physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

The revamped Bluenergy Stadium will not only continue hosting major sports and cultural events but will also become a modern hub for the local community. The project underscores the strong connection between the city of Udine and Udinese Calcio, promising economic, tourism, and social benefits for the city and the region.
