The clock is ticking as we approach 2025, and uncertainties surrounding the 2030 World Cup continue to grow. One major issue is the renovation of La Rosaleda, necessary to meet FIFA’s requirements. Arturo Bernal, Minister of Tourism and Global Andalusia, confirmed that moving Nueva Rosaleda to a new location cannot be ruled out.

Is renovating La Rosaleda really the best option?
We are working to ensure that these major projects thrive in both Seville (La Cartuja) and Málaga (La Rosaleda). We’re setting an example of loyal and long-term collaboration. Seville has its La Cartuja stadium, which is in a very advanced stage of progress to maximize its capacity. This project is so exciting that we don’t know if it will eventually be realized at La Rosaleda or if we’ll need to find a different location. Both solutions are possible and positive. Hosting the World Cup would be another fantastic showcase for Málaga and Seville,
Bernal stated in an interview with Radio MARCA Málaga.
This statement leaves the door open for Nueva Rosaleda to be situated in a different location than the one initially proposed. At that time, two options were being considered, given the significant renovation required for La Rosaleda. It’s normal to weigh both possibilities: renovating the stadium or building a new one. We would prefer to proceed with the first option, as the stadium is a treasure chest of dreams and memories, and we understand that most Málaga fans would prefer this. However, we must choose the most appropriate option from an economic perspective,
Bernal emphasized. The final decision will be made by the Department of Sports and the various administrations that own La Rosaleda, balancing its historical significance with the financial feasibility of the investment.
