First phase to begin soon
At a recent press conference, Councilor Pilar Lueiro announced that Santiago’s city council has approved a request to the Provincial Council of A Coruña for a grant to carry out part of the work included in the first phase of Estadio Verónica Boquete’s modernization. This four-month phase will involve cleaning and painting the facade, cleaning surfaces with water, applying a special coating, repairing heavily damaged areas, and sealing gaps between facade components and the main structure. For the roof, work will include replacing polycarbonate panels, cleaning, and applying a waterproof coating.
Lueiro emphasized the Council's commitment to enhancing the city's sports infrastructure, urging all administrative bodies to cooperate in achieving this goal, stating that Compostela deserves
an adequate space for sports. Part of a larger investment
This phase is part of a broader modernization plan announced in June, encompassing five major stages: energy renovation and waterproofing; infrastructure updates; accessibility improvements; and climate control for outdoor spaces. The Council aims to prioritize roof work to address water leakage issues, as the stadium, inaugurated in June 1993, has suffered from severe structural deficiencies since its opening. This complex has been plagued by significant structural issues from the outset, which have only worsened over time. That’s why, together with the Santiago City Council, we’re working to tackle this problem at its root, designing a comprehensive and ambitious stadium reform that supports everything from regular sporting activities to top-level events,
Lueiro stated at the time.
The plan for Estadio Verónica Boquete includes €1.2 million for renovating the stadium’s facade, roof, and arcades; €3.1 million for sports area upgrades; €2 million for a self-defense plan divided into four phases; and €2.8 million for conditioning. The total investment will amount to €9.37 million. In addition to roof and facade work, the project also includes bringing the facilities up to current accessibility and safety standards, renewing sports equipment, and adapting both the grass pitch and athletics tracks to the current needs of clubs and individual users.
The council also highlights the need to redevelop the area surrounding the stadium to transform the complex into a landmark space for urban outdoor sports.
