Manchester United has yet to make a final decision regarding the future of Old Trafford. The club is considering both a major renovation of the current stadium and the construction of an entirely new venue.

Decision postponed to better prepare for investment
United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has leaned toward demolishing Old Trafford to build a modern stadium valued at £2 billion with seating for 100,000, in the same location. The current Old Trafford structure requires urgent updates. Until now, it seemed likely that the club would opt for a completely new stadium, with the design under the direction of architects from the Populous firm. An official decision was expected by the end of 2024, but the club has now decided to put this process on hold.
Manchester United has been consulting with the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, whose members include Lord Sebastian Coe, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, former team captain Gary Neville, as well as representatives of the club’s fanbase. The Telegraph reports that the club has decided to postpone the final decision until next summer, with the task force’s report expected by year-end. The main reason for the delay is the need to secure additional land around Old Trafford to realize the bold and ambitious
vision proposed by the task force. In particular, the neighboring parcel currently occupied by a freight terminal would be needed to carry out the ambitious 100-acre revitalization project.

Hopes for support from Manchester authorities
United is seeking clarity regarding its options, including the potential relocation of the freight terminal before making a final decision. Burnham and Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram hope to reach an agreement with Freightliner to move the terminal to St Helens, which would free up space for Old Trafford’s redevelopment.
United would need to finance the stadium itself but could benefit from public funds to cover related transportation and infrastructure costs. The club, therefore, plans to await the mayor's new budget, expected in March, hoping that some funds will be allocated for this project.
Close cooperation with fans on the future of the stadium
The club’s survey results indicate that the majority of Manchester United fans favor a new stadium. Over 52% of more than 50,000 season ticket holders, members, and supporters support building a new stadium, while 31% are in favor of renovating the existing Old Trafford. The remainder are undecided.
Rick McGagh, United’s director of fan engagement, stated, We’re pleased with the strong response to the survey, which shows how important our home is to our fans. We want to hear their thoughts and insights to create a world-class stadium they deserve.
In the coming days, the club will hold meetings with the local community, where fans can get more information on the various plans being discussed.
