Investment in Santiago's sporting future

Public Works Minister Jessica López and Sports Minister Jaime Pizarro officially announced the start of the 4 billion pesos upgrade of Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos. The meeting took place at the main pitch, where a cooperation agreement and transfer of funds for the renovation work was signed. The project has already received approval from the National Council of Monuments and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

Minister López stressed that the modernisation of the National Stadium is a huge challenge, but also a source of pride. For our part, we have provided funds for the improvements that the Coliseum requires, which includes an important part of the facility. So, as a government, we are once again working together to ensure good conditions for our athletes the Minister said.

Jaime Pizarro added that Coliseum will play a key role during the championships. There will be improvements to the changing rooms, the public toilets and the pitch, so it is very important to thank the Minister for her contribution. It is important to see how, as has already been the case for the Santiago 2023 Games, inter-ministerial work is fundamental to the implementation of important projects.

Scope of modernisation work

The modernisation of Estadio Nacional will include key infrastructure elements to improve functionality. One of the most important stages is the installation of a modern hybrid turf on the main pitch. The hybrid turf, which combines natural and synthetic components, will provide greater durability and optimal playing conditions. The turf work will take into account local agronomic conditions and soil condition, with a key phase taking place in December 2024 and January 2025.

The players' changing rooms will also undergo a major upgrade. It is planned to introduce modern equipment, including new benches, lockers and massage beds. Cryotherapy tubs will also be installed to support athletes' recovery. The renovation will also include the replacement of sanitary fittings, the installation of vinyl floors and the covering of the walls with ceramic tiles.

The public bathrooms used by fans will also be significantly improved. The introduction of sanitary fittings with anti-vandal properties will increase the durability of the fixtures and improve user safety. The floors will be covered with modern polyurethane-cement flooring, and the walls will be repainted and finished with ceramic tiles. In addition, the cubicles and lighting will be replaced.
