Italy: Modernisation in Florence several months longer than expected? Everything indicates that the modernization work at Stadio Artemio Franchi will take longer than originally anticipated. Palazzo Vecchio has decided to meet the requests of Fiorentina's management so that the team does not have to leave the venue. Currently, a new, slower investment schedule is being developed.

New work schedule tailored to the club's needs

Initial, partial hypotheses regarding the new work schedule for Stadio Artemio Franchi are emerging from the city hall. It is estimated that the work will take about 18-20 months longer than initially planned, meaning the entire investment will not be completed in 2026 but rather in 2028.

The modernization will also cost more, with the expenses expected to increase by 10-15 million €. This amount will be added to the at least 65-70 million € that have long been lacking due to cuts in funding guaranteed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr).

Minister highlights solutions to improve comfort during construction

Francesco Casini, the leader of the Italia Viva group, presented the City Council with a proposal related to the ongoing work. He asked whether it would be appropriate to cover the construction site currently located at the Fiesole curve and to better organize the work using specific solutions. He also pointed out that the white background of the current panels behind the goal on the Fiesole side creates an optical effect that makes it difficult to see the ball from different sectors of the stadium. Casini further suggested assessing the possibility of attracting sponsors by offering advertising space that could generate additional revenue for the municipality or Fiorentina.

The goal is to ensure the best management of the ongoing work while maintaining a decent image of the stadium during this transitional period, providing fans with greater comfort and visibility, declared Casini.

Goal: Euro 2032

Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated during the Next Generation Fest in Florence that the Stadio Franchi renovation project has gained momentum thanks to discussions between the club and local authorities. He confirmed the government's support, which will provide the necessary tools to facilitate this process.

In closing, while discussing Stadio Franchi's candidacy for Euro 2032, Abodi noted that the renovation process is proceeding as planned, construction is already underway, and deadlines are being met. Even though competition for hosting matches will be fierce, the minister hopes Florence will be included in the final selection due to the stadium's significance and the city's value.
