Key meeting at Ministry of Culture

In recent years, the subject of the future of Giuseppe Meazza has been the subject of heated discussions regarding its upgrade or replacement with a new stadium. Today, we already know that Inter Milan and AC Milan intend to build a new stadium in San Siro area, while redeveloping the existing facility. The decision follows fruitful talks held in Rome on October 22, with key figures in attendance.

The meeting, held in Rome, was attended by representatives of both Milanese clubs - Inter and AC Milan - represented by owners Oaktree Capital and RedBird Capital Partners. Also present were Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, Superintendent Emanuela Carpani, Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli and Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the future of the San Siro stadium and the plans for a new venue to be built next to the historic Giuseppe Meazza stadium.

According to communiqués issued by the City of Milan, the talks took place in a positive atmosphere, with all participants expressing their appreciation of the proposed solutions. Inter and Milan clubs are expected to submit formal expressions of interest in the near future, allowing the procedure to continue.

New stadium next to Giuseppe Meazza

One of the main topics of discussion was the hypothesis of building a new stadium in the immediate vicinity of the Giuseppe Meazza. According to the proposed solution, Inter and Milan are to purchase the land where the current stadium is located and then proceed to develop it. The project envisages the construction of a modern stadium that meets the highest standards, but also the development of the surrounding area.

An important part of the plan is also the redevelopment of Meazza stadium according to guidelines provided by Superintendent Carpani. Although the modernisation of the old stadium was considered difficult to achieve at an affordable cost, the new guidelines aim to preserve the historic character of the venue.

During the meeting, both Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi expressed their appreciation of the proposals made. The clubs' chief executives said they would soon proceed with the formal steps to make the project possible. In the meantime, an assessment is awaited from the Agenzia delle Entrate, which is expected to provide the necessary framework for the valuation of the land and the stadium.

Is the redevelopment of San Siro possible?

One of the significant challenges facing the Milan authorities and football clubs is the issue of architectural constraints related to the historical value of the Giuseppe Meazza. The stadium, built in 1926, is an important part of Milan's cultural heritage. As such, there is a risk that the Superintendency will impose restrictions on the possibility of redeveloping the facility.

According to the information available, these restrictions would come into force next year, forcing clubs to make quick decisions on the future of the Meazza. For the moment, the project assumes that the stadium will be upgraded and that its historic value will be preserved. However, the question remains as to how much of an impact the redevelopment will have on conservation protection.

The decision to build a new stadium could also affect the construction of two separate stadiums for Inter and AC Milan. Today's conference has most likely closed the topic of new venue in San Donato Milanese and stadium in Rozzano.
