Italy: Construction of AS Roma's new stadium suspended again

At the end of September, the Rome municipality handed over certain areas to AS Roma, where access had been restricted in recent months. These are plots near Via degli Aromi, which are still subject to various appeals. However, the decision to grant the club access to resume archaeological and geotechnical surveys brought renewed hope.

Work on the project
The availability of these areas is crucial, especially considering the declared goal, shared by both AS Roma and the city authorities, of inaugurating the new stadium in the club's centennial year. The Pietralata stadium is a key component of Roma's development strategy.
The club has informally (never officially) committed to the city authorities to deliver the final stadium project within a few months, no later than the end of this year or early next year.

Another residents’ protest
On October 1st, Italian media reported that the construction had been suspended once again. According to La Repubblica, on September 27th, an appeal was filed with the Rome Civil Court to restore possession
of the lands that were expropriated in August and had begun to be cleared. The residents of Pietralata are now prepared to present all the documentation regarding the land behind Tiburtina Station to the civil court judges.
Previous suspension requests were denied twice – once by the Lazio Regional Administrative Court and again by the Council of State – so now the residents have decided to take the matter to the Civil Court. The next step is to wait for the hearing to be scheduled regarding the future of the homes currently located on the Pietralata site.
