Authorities meeting and key decisions

The meeting was attended by: Patricia del Pozo, regional minister for culture and sport, Francisco Salado, president of the Malaga provincial council, and Francisco de la Torre, mayor of Málaga. The three administrations, which are equal owners of the stadium, agreed to continue work on the project to transform La Rosaleda.

One of the most important points discussed at the meeting was the need to increase the number of seats in the stadium. The stadium's current capacity of around 30,000 seats is to be expanded to 45,000. If La Rosaleda is to consist of 50,000 or 75,000 seats, so much the better - de la Torre stated. This is a significant decision, especially in the context of the high interest in football in the region, as highlighted by the so-called Malagamanía - a surge in enthusiasm among local fans that has led to sold-out match tickets.

Comprehensive modernisation of La Rosaleda

The transformation of the stadium is not limited to increasing capacity. The Malaga authorities plan to transform the entire stadium complex, integrating it into a wider urban development plan. Among the proposals is the construction of a luxury hotel and the expansion of the service infrastructure to make La Rosaleda one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Spain.

Improving access to the stadium, communications and providing an adequate number of parking spaces is also a key aspect. As many as 5,000 parking spaces are planned to facilitate traffic organisation and accommodate more visitors. All this is aimed at meeting the stringent requirements of FIFA.

The transformation of La Rosaleda stadium aims not only to improve conditions for fans, but also to create a modern sports and commercial centre that will attract investors and tourists from all over the world. The Málaga authorities have launched a €300,000 tender to study the commercial possibilities of the stadium . The aim is to attract private capital to help finance the expansion of the stadium and surrounding areas.

Work schedule

The Málaga authorities have a clear timetable for the work, which aims to complete the transformation of La Rosaleda by 2028, two years before the World Cup. This is a key deadline so that all the work can be carried out on time and the stadium can fully meet the requirements of the World Cup organisers. All this is taking place against a backdrop of rising costs, currently estimated at more than €260 million.
