They want to fulfill dreams

The club president, Víctor Velázquez, has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to providing the team with its own stadium, which would fulfill a decades-long dream of La Maquina fans. We want our partners, employees, and fans to have their own home, Velázquez recently wrote on his social media, sharing a preview of the architectural project that is generating great expectations.

Five options

The possibility of carrying out the project in Tlalnepantla de Baz, located north of Mexico City, was recently ruled out. The alternative sites are varied and strategically located. One of the options that is attracting the most attention is the Velodrome, located east of the capital. In addition to being close to the Magdalena Mixihuca sports complex, it offers good accessibility due to important access roads.

Another option that has generated interest is the March 18th Refinery site, where the Bicentennial Park is located. This location, combining green spaces and a central position, could become an icon not only for the club but also for the city. Axis 6 around Cuitláhuac Park is also being considered. This area, located in the eastern part of the city, could offer a unique opportunity for revitalizing the neighborhood and providing it with new sports infrastructure.

Cruz Azul is also eyeing locations in Tlalpan and Ajusco. The land near TV Azteca could be a viable option, considering the availability and size of the area, which would allow for the execution of a large-scale architectural project. Although all five locations have their pros and cons, the management is conducting thorough analyses to ensure that the final decision not only benefits the team and its fans but also turns the stadium into a new landmark in Mexico.

Cruz Azul plays its home games at Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes, formerly known as Estadio Azul. La Maquina Celeste has spent over 20 years at this venue. A few days ago, a video leaked on social media showing that the stadium is in a state of significant disrepair, and minor renovation work is being carried out in the area in front of the venue. Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes was inaugurated in 1946 and can accommodate 36,681 fans. Due to its aging structure, the stadium was not considered in Mexico's bids for international tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Therefore, a decision was made in 2010 to demolish it and build Nuevo Estadio Azul, but this plan has yet to be implemented.
