Germany: New solar roof at Borussia Dortmund stadium As part of a new partnership between Borussia Dortmund and RWE, a modern photovoltaic system integrated with energy storage has been installed on the roof of the stadium. This will make the venue one of the greenest football stadiums in the world.

Partnership for sustainability

Borussia Dortmund and RWE have entered into a six-year partnership with the main aim of optimising energy consumption at Signal Iduna Park. This strategic agreement will not only increase the energy efficiency of the venue, but also reduce its carbon footprint.

A key component of the stadium upgrade is the expansion and upgrade of the photovoltaic system on the roof of the venue. More than 9,500 new photovoltaic modules have been installed, generating a total of more than 4.2 megawatts of power. As a result of this upgrade, the stadium will be able to meet a significant portion of its energy needs through renewable sources.

Energy storage on new level

To maximise the potential of solar energy, the new photovoltaic system has been integrated with a 3.4 megawatt-hour energy storage facility. This will enable the stadium to use green energy even when the sun is not shining. In practice, this means that the energy produced by the system on the roof of the stadium will cover the energy needs of all Borussia Dortmund matches played in the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.

The surplus electricity generated by the new photovoltaic system will not be wasted. Surplus energy will be sold to the power grid, bringing additional financial benefits to the club. However, this is not the end of the joint sustainability efforts - further energy projects at Borussia Dortmund will be developed as part of this partnership. Already in April 2024, BVB and RWE started their cooperation by installing a new solar system of more than 200 modules on the roof of the BVB fan centre, which is located adjacent to the stadium.
