Spain: Metropolitano close to changing its name? Atlético de Madrid and Cívitas are in advanced talks to terminate their sponsorship deal for the Metropolitano stadium. This could mean another name change for the Madrid sports venue, which could soon welcome a new partner.

Stadium name change

Estadio Metropolitano, located in Madrid's San Blas district, became the home of Atlético de Madrid in 2017, when the club decided to move from the legendary Estadio Vicente Calderón. Even then, the decision to give the new venue a commercial name was a clear indication of the club's intention to pursue sponsorship opportunities.

The first partner to tie its name to the new stadium was China's Wanda Group. In 2022, following the completion of the partnership with Wanda, Cívitas - a property development company from Extremadura - signed a ten-year sponsorship deal worth around €90 million.

Why is Atlético de Madrid dropping Cívitas?

According to El Independiente, Atlético de Madrid is considering ending its partnership with Cívitas mainly because of the possibility of finding a new sponsor that could provide the club with even greater financial benefits. Although the current agreement with Cívitas brings the club €9 million a year, Miguel Ángel Gil, Atlético's owner, is determined to find a partner that will bring more financial benefits.

Although the end of the sponsorship deal between Cívitas and Atlético de Madrid seems imminent, sources point out that this does not mean a complete break-up of the two parties. In fact, the collaboration between the club and the construction company goes far beyond the naming of the stadium. Cívitas is one of the key partners in the development of the Ciudad del Deporte project, a huge sports complex to be built adjacent to the Metropolitano stadium. The project includes the construction of modern sports infrastructure, including a wave pool, an artificial beach, numerous pitches and tennis courts. The investment will exceed €200 million.

What's next for Metropolitano?

Although negotiations between Cívitas and Atlético de Madrid are already at an advanced stage, as yet no new stadium sponsor has been officially announced. However, there are many indications that the club already has its eye on potential partners with whom it is in talks.

While details of the termination of the contract with Cívitas are being finalised, the future of the Metropolitano stadium remains open. It is possible that the venue, which has already changed its name twice, will once again take on a new commercial name in the coming months.
