Lots of plans, just as much action?
Estadio Municipal Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas is a multi-purpose stadium in Marbella, allowing for football, rugby union and athletics competitions, as well as artistic events. At the moment it is a permanently closed facility awaiting a suitable upgrade.
The Euros and Copa America are now over. League games in the Netherlands or Spain start in mid-August, and some people are looking for alternative entertainment while they wait. The Marbella FC team will continue to play at Dama de Noche stadium for the next two seasons. The mayor stressed that the project meets all legal and technical requirements and that demolition work on the old Lorenzo Cuevas stadium will begin after the summer of 2024. The goal is for Marbella FC to be able to play in their stadium in three seasons' time
- stressed Muñoz.
The project for the new stadium is being considered from a technical point of view at the city council, and the necessary documents were submitted in April. I hope that in the next few days we will have these favourable reports for public exhibition
added Muñoz. The process of obtaining permits and publishing the concession for the plot is expected to be completed in the summer. It is expected to cost around €120 million to complete, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Malaga region.
The mayor's announcements have been met with mixed reactions. Although Ángeles Muñoz assures that work is progressing as planned, previous promises regarding the timing of the demolition of the old stadium and the construction of the new one have raised questions. The current assumption is that the Lorenzo Cuevas stadium will be demolished after the summer of 2024 to allow construction of the new facility to begin. To some, such a short date sounds like an unfunny joke. Especially as the demolition has already been planned twice and not executed.
Details of new facility
In 2018, sports agency Best of You, on behalf of a Chinese investor, took over the management of Marbella FC. The new owners had ambitious plans not only on the sporting field, but also in terms of infrastructure development. In July 2020, the striking design for Marbella's new stadium was officially unveiled. As it later turned out, however, the ambitious project remained only in the realm of plans.
To make matters worse for the club, in 2021, the team landed straight into the fifth league tier. In addition, a section of the stands subsided during the match, resulting in two fans suffering minor injuries. The incident resulted in the closure of the stadium by the local authorities.
On February 10 2022, the city announced a competition for the architectural concept of the new stadium. The specifications specified a capacity of 8,000 spectators, plus an athletics hall and car parks were to be built alongside the stadium. The city's budget was €19 million, of which €18 million was to be spent on the construction of the stadium and €1 million on design work.
The stadium is to have a compact, rectangular arrangement of stands, which will be noticeably higher along the pitch. The auditorium will be covered with a roof and shielded from the outside by a white façade. Behind the south grandstand will be an athletics hall with a 200-metre running track and stands for 1,200 people. Its south wall will be glazed, allowing passers-by to see inside. On the roof of the hall, there will be a large square, and 960 parking spaces will be created around the facility.
