Butarque Stadium, home of club CD Leganés, is on the threshold of a major change. Thanks to an investment of almost €42 million from CVC funds (LaLiga Impulso project), the stadium and the adjacent Butarque Sports Centre will be transformed into a modern leisure centre that is set to become a model facility in the south of Madrid.

Signing of agreement with city
Work on the transformation of Butarque Municipal Stadium is dependent on a long-term administrative concession, which Leganés is seeking from the city hall. Both city and club representatives confirm that the concession is close to being finalised. Optimistic predictions are that the contract will be signed soon, allowing construction work to begin.
Fans are waiting for events to develop, and in the meantime are also busy watching the Olympic Games, among other things. These competitions will take place in four years' time in the United States, including at the NFL stadium in Los Angeles. The main goals of the project are to increase the seating capacity to 14,000-15,000 and create additional services for fans. The current capacity of the stadium is 12,454 seats, which have not been fully utilised since the last expansion in 2019. The upgrade will also include the roofing of the stands.
The lengthy negotiations between Leganés and the city hall were successful thanks to the involvement of Eduardo Cosín, the club's vice-president, and Carlos Delgado, First Deputy Mayor. The city obtained a guarantee that the modernisation of the stadium would also benefit the people of Leganés. One symbolic gesture is the return of the Pepinito tournament, which has been held at the Butarque stadium since June 30 after a 28-year break.
The signing of the deal required going through a series of administrative restrictions linked to the club's 2022 sale agreement. After 30 June, the club's current owners had more freedom to make decisions about the future of the stadium.
Estádio Municipal Butarque - stadium description
Estadio Butarque, built in the suburban city of Leganés, replaced Estadio Luis Rodriguez de Miguel, built back in the 1960s, as the home of the local club. Its construction was completed in 1998 and since then it has been the venue for CD Leganés' home games.
When it opened, the stadium had a capacity of 8138 and this remained the case until 2016. It was then that CD Leganés won their historic promotion to the Primera División and an investment in the expansion of the venue became necessary.
The body of the stadium has the characteristic shape of an oval, truncated on the west side. The eastern grandstand is covered, the other stands and the corners remain uncovered. The stands are coloured blue, characteristic of the CD Leganés team, and have the inscriptions "CD Leganés" on the west stand and "1928" and "2018" on the south and north stands respectively.
In 2014, the stadium lived to see the installation of a 7x3m scoreboard above the west stand. There is also a pitch (west of the stadium building) inside the Estadio Butarque complex, which hosts the second-team and the other CD Leganés teams' matches. There are plans to expand the facilities in the future, particularly with a view to developing a football school.
