Italy: 2027 Champions League final not at San Siro? Milan is being forced to abandon the hosting of the Champions League final in 2027. The decision, although as yet unofficial, is due to the planned renovation work on the stadium, which is crucial to the preparations for Euro 2032. Will Rome manage to take over as host?

Euro 2032 at the expense of the Champions League final

Although the news of Milan's withdrawal from hosting the 2027 Champions League final has not yet been officially confirmed, there are many indications that the legendary San Siro will not be the venue to decide the fate of Europe's most important club trophy. Many had hoped that Milan, following the organisational success of the 2026 Winter Olympics, would be able to continue its role as host of the world's biggest sporting events.

The reason why the San Siro lost the chance to host the Champions League final is due to plans to renovate the stadium in preparation for the 2032 Euro. The stadium renovation project, presented by WeBuild, involves upgrading the venue to meet modern standards. Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and vice-president of UEFA, points out that the renovation of San Siro is crucial for the future of the stadium, but its timetable prevents the Champions League final from being played at the venue in 2027.

The FIGC must submit plans for the stadium renovation and the financing of the project by October 2026 at the latest. Although the San Siro is to be included in the documentation, UEFA has decided not to risk hosting such an important match at the site. The renovation is expected to begin before the 2026 Winter Olympics and not be completed until in time for Euro 2032.

Is Rome alternative to Milan?

With Milan resigning from hosting the final, it may now be awarded to Rome, which is mentioned by the Italian media as a potential plan B. The Italian capital already has experience of hosting major sporting events, with Rome's Stadio Olimpico having hosted many memorable football matches, including the Champions League final in 2009.
