"The most complex project"

This is a historic day for Panathinaikos, commented Athens Mayor Haris Doukas in a social media post after the approval was announced, stating that it marks the culmination of eight months of hard work by the municipal authorities to finally get this long-delayed project underway. The 40,000-seat stadium is part of a larger urban redevelopment project in the Votanikos district, which also includes a park, entertainment facilities, and shops.

According to the authorities, the project is the largest and most complex municipal project ever undertaken in our country. The construction of the new stadium also involves the demolition of Panathinaikos' historic headquarters on Alexandras Avenue in the city center, for which permission has also been granted.

Budget already secured

Funding of €115 million has been secured for the construction of the stadium, which was approved by the Ministry of Environment and Energy on June 20, 2024. An additional €6.8 million in funding was also obtained, and land reclamation work is currently underway at the site, so that the first concrete for the stadium's foundations can be poured within a few weeks.
