SoFi Stadium and its unusual use
The Los Angeles Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28) has proposed the first in a series of updates to its facility plans, which are expected to save more than $150 million and move some events out of the city.
SoFi Stadium, located in Inglewood, will be the main arena for the Games. The modern stadium, which currently hosts the 2024 Copa America, will in future host the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games.
The stadium, which can hold up to 70,000 spectators, will host the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as football and archery competitions. An interesting note is the decision to also host swimming competitions in this stadium, which will require special modifications to the facility.
Other Olympic arenas
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which has a rich Olympic history, will host the main athletics competitions, the second opening ceremony and part of the closing ceremony. The list of events that have taken place at this prestigious venue is extremely long. In addition to two editions of the Olympic Games, American football teams have regularly played their games here.
Other important venues include Rose Bowl, which is known as the largest stadium in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the site of the Rose Bowl
and, since 1982, also as the home of the UCLA Bruins university team. The stadium is also of great importance to football, having hosted the 1994 World Cup final and the 1984 Olympic gold medal match, and will host the next football games at the 2028 Olympics.
BMO Stadium, the stadium of Los Angeles FC, will also be the venue for football matches, but in addition will host some athletics competitions such as the hammer throw, javelin throw and discus throw.
