Olympiastadion: Victory in front of Hitler and timeless reconstruction - Euro 2024 final stadium Olympiastadion was inaugurated before the Second World War for the Olympic Games, which were marked by a symbolic victory. Ups and downs of the Olympic stadium

The stadium opened in 1936 for the Olympic Games. It was a time when Germany under Nazi rule wanted to show its power. The arena, designed by Werner March, could hold more than 100,000 spectators and was an architectural masterpiece of its time. It was here that Jesse Owens, an African-American athlete, won four gold medals, dealing a symbolic blow to Hitler's ideology.

After World War II, the stadium underwent many changes. Partially destroyed during the bombings, the Olympiastadion was rebuilt and adapted to the new times. In the 1960s and 1970s it served as a venue for major sporting events and concerts.

A new century - a new stadium

A landmark moment was the modernisation of the stadium before the 2006 World Cup. Modern infrastructure, increased capacity and roofing made it ready to host the final of that tournament, in which Italy beat France. The encounter was memorable for fans around the world, and the incident between Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi is still recalled to this day.

In 2024, Olympiastadion is once again the centre of world football. The European Championship final will attract billions of people. We discuss both this stadium and other Euro 2024 venues in a video on our YouTube channel.
