Maryland will have a modern stadium
All stadiums in which NFL league games are played have a capacity of at least 63,000. It can therefore be concluded that the disparity in this respect between the structures is not large. The case is different when it comes to the rest of the infrastructure. Some of the American venues are outdated and need to be renovated in order for the profits from commercial functions to keep growing. Among this group is M&T Bank Stadium. Its owners realise that it needs radical changes to allow it to reach its full potential.
The arena was opened 25 years ago, underwent its most recent upgrade in 2017-2019, and on its own it hardly gives the impression of a structure in urgent need of renovation. Even so, rapidly rising standards make changes indispensable. In the first half of December 2023, the Ravens presented plans for how their house is to change. The project is to be completed within three years and will significantly improve the local fans' experience of watching their favourite team live.
Upgrading M&T Bank will cost a lot indeed
The renovation will involve all stands. The most visible changes will affect the northern and southern sections, where external terraces will be created. Social amenities for fans - catering, sanitary facilities and relaxation areas - will be renovated. The eastern part of the venue will also undergo a refurbishment, gaining new commercial space.
However, the business boxes, screens, air circulation systems, as well as stairs and lifts, will not be renovated. These elements of the structure were appropriately upgraded during the previous investment between 2017 and 2019. The developer also does not foresee the construction of a roof. This element of arenas used by NFL clubs is becoming more common, but it is extremely expensive.
According to media reports, the cost of the upcoming renovation will be around $430 million. As assured by Baltimore Ravens president Sashi Brown, the ongoing infrastructure investment is aimed at securing the long-term viability of the stadium. The work will be carried out by Gilbane Building Company. The company was already the contractor for the previously mentioned renovation carried out late last decade.
