Rubiales' calling card
Since 2020, the format of the Spanish Super Cup has changed. Instead of a single match before the start of the league season, a mini-tournament with semi-finals and a final is played between the two Copa del Rey finalists and the two highest-ranked teams in the league. This change was introduced at the beginning of Luis Rubiales' presidency. Three out of four Super Cups in its current format were played in Saudi Arabia, with only Sevilla hosting it in 2021.
The upcoming edition of the competition will take place in Riyadh from January 10 to 14, with the participation of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Osasuna.
From King Fahd to Saud
In 2022 and 2023, the Spanish Super Cup also took place in Riyadh, at King Fahd Stadium. However, in 2024, there will be a change of location to Al-Awwal Park, located on the campus of King Saud University, capable of accommodating 25,000 people.
It was opened in 2015 and has already hosted important football events, such as the Italian Super Cup in 2019, featuring Lazio and Juventus. The stadium also hosted the Maradona Cup in 2021, where FC Barcelona and Boca Juniors competed. In 2018, a friendly match between Saudi Arabia and Brazil took place at the venue. Currently, Al-Nassr plays its home matches at Al-Awwal Park Stadium.
