Construction of Everton Stadium began almost exactly two years ago. The venue, with a target capacity of 53,000 spectators, is being built on the banks of the River Mersey and is due for completion in the final months of 2024. Unfortunately, a tragic accident occurred at the so far smoothly progressing construction site on Monday around 12:30 local time.
As a result of the incident, a 26-year-old male, who was working at the Bramley-Moore dock site, was seriously injured. According to Merseyside Police, the injured man was subsequently taken by ambulance to hospital, where he died. The stadium's main contractor, Laing O'Rourke, immediately launched an investigation and will be working with the police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish all the details of the incident.
The club has released a statement on its website, which reads: Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock. The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.
Stadium main contractor Laing O'Rourke said work on the site had been suspended until further notice, adding that they were shocked and saddened
