Residents of China are proud of their new venue. The ultra-modern Yueyang Sports Center Stadium made it to the list of 36 football arenas nominated for the prestigious Stadium of the Year 2022 award. The competition is the largest public vote of its kind in the world. Since the first edition began, a total of more than 400,000 valid votes have been counted.

This year’s contest is highly varied, with stadiums from as many as six different continents taking part: 18 venues are from Asia, 8 from Europe, 4 from Africa, 3 from North America, 2 from South America and 1 from Australia and Oceania. Get to know Yueyang Sports Center Stadium

The new sports complex in Yueyang was built on the eastern outskirts of the city. The investment was carried out in two phases. The first, completed between 2010 and 2016, was the construction of the main sports hall and indoor swimming pool. Between 2020 and 2022, the second phase was carried out, which included the construction of further facilities and landscaping, but above all the main stadium of the complex was then built.

The main driving force behind its construction was the possibility of hosting the Hunan Provincial Games. The development fills a gap in the city's sports infrastructure and is part of its eastward expansion. The first event held at the new stadium was the opening ceremony of the aforementioned competition, held on September 8, 2022. As part of the Games, athletics competitions were also held at the arena, while tennis, gymnastics or swimming competitions were hosted at other venues in the new complex. Here are some interesting facts about the arena: 

• The stadium cost 326.55 million yuan.
• The capacity of the venue is 23 619 spectators.
• The three most important facilities of the complex (stadium, hall and swimming facility) are connected to each other by an elevated promenade.
• Dragon motifs can be found in the architecture of the landscape and the complex's facilities, as well as references to local traditions and culture.

In order to take part, everyone has to select five stadiums by giving 5 stars to the best one, 4 stars to the second best, 3 stars to the third, 2 stars for the fourth and finally 1 star for the fifth most interesting. It means that you cannot cast your vote for only one stadium - all 5 venues must be included in your form.
