Why is a new stadium being built in Kansas City?
Until now, the players of the Kansas City club have shared Children's Mercy Park with the footballers of local Sporting. However, the team management wanted to become independent, so the idea was to invest in their own arena. As well as solving the problem of arena booking deadlines, they will be able to rent facility to others and make additional profits from it. Supporters and members of the local community have not been forgotten either. Kansas City Current Stadium will be built near Berkley Riverfront Park and will be the focal point of the revitalised Kansas Harbor waterfront.
In a bid to heat things up a little, KC Current has unveiled two new renderings of the ongoing development. The Christopher S. Bond Bridge, visible in one of them, with its huge pylon almost 100 metres high, is a remarkable sight. Some perceptive people have decided to make a joke of it by pointing out that in the same rendering one of the teams on the pitch is playing with an incomplete line-up. A simple oversight? Perhaps. After all, who pays attention to such details.
When will the Kansas City stadium be inaugurated?
In addition to the visuals, the Kansas City-based club presented a project roadmap with milestones included. According to this plan, the foundations for the stadium under construction should be poured any moment now and the installation of the steel structure will start in the spring. The timetable in this form will certainly make it much easier for ordinary fans to follow the works, who will be able to verify issues of possible delays of this investment. Construction is due to be completed in March 2024.
The total cost of building the arena will be more than $117 million. The project is being fully privately funded by the club's owners: Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes. Thanks to them, Kansas City women's football was reactivated in 2020 after a three-year absence from the National Women's Soccer League map. Land for construction under a 50-year lease was obtained from the local port, which leased a seven-acre parcel of land in the northeast part of the city to Current.
