Some residents of Krakow may have been surprised on Monday evening as the city’s largest stadium came back to life despite no game being played.
300 flares were lit by fans on all four grandstands to mark a special occasion, topped by a fireworks display. Aside from people holding flares, the stadium was almost empty and the performance celebrated the end of Wisła’s 110-year anniversary.
The pyroshow was available for everyone attending Wisła’s traditional Christmas party, which for the first time was held in the stadium’s west stand instead of nearby indoor arena.
While lighting flares in or around Polish stadia is punished by even prison sentences, this display was entirely legal and authorized by the public entity Sports Infrastructure Authority (ZIS) who own the stadium.
