We all knew the canopy would be illuminated at night, but it now appears that Atletico might boost the mood inside by changing its colour depending on the action.

Ever since the concept was presented in 2011, it was clear that Estadio La Peineta’s roof will become its new signature feature. Surely, almost 70,000 seats and over 40,000 m2 of parkings hidden beneath the stands are impressive, but it’s the canopy that will make the stadium a landmark for both fans inside and passers-by outside.
Rising to 57 meters above the field, the roof will be visible from afar especially at night, because it was designed with illumination in mind. Except that back in 2011 it was envisaged as white light for the whole fabric, with only a red ribbon decorating it from the outside. Now, after Atletico teamed up with Philips in September, we know how the updated illumination plan looks.
As is becoming increasingly common worldwide, the stadium’s roof will be able to display colours, gradients and patterns dynamically inside the stadium and out, enabling influence on matchday atmosphere and reaction to events on the field.
Whether it will prove a real atmosphere enhancement and how it fits with domestic/international football regulations still seems to be an open question. What’s known is that the system will make quite a visual impression, as seen on the below video.
The roof and its lighting system will be ready along with the whole stadium in 2017, before the 2017/2018 season begins.
