Earlier this week the Regional Council of Sardinia approved construction of a new football stadium on the site of Stadio Sant’Elia. It’s the second positive step for this project after it’s been greenlighted in April by the City Council.
As the Regional Council stated, the new stadium is along the best interest of the public and is of major importance for the entire region. New 21,000-seat football stadium in Cagliari will be Sardinia’s single best sports facility.
Before it can get under construction, some proceedings still need to follow. Most importantly, the local zoning needs to be changed in order to allow commercial functions on the stadium site. Retail and office developments located throughout its large plinth will make the new stadium a leisure destination 7 days a week.
The newly-elected City Council should get on the issue soon after being sworn into office, in upcoming weeks. Then international construction tender can be launched. The stadium, designed by Polish JSK Architects, is estimated to cost €55 million ($62.5m) and be ready in 2019.
