Four types of piles are already in the ground, main foundation slab has also been delivered. The basis for future Al Wakrah Stadium is complete, allowing for actual construction to begin.
With general contractor selected late in 2015, we should expect cranes to appear within the next few weeks. Within 30 months the 40,000-capacity stadium will be complete. Roughly half of its stand will only be in place temporarily, pending post-World-Cup relocation.
The 48-meter tall structure will be ready in late 2018 and the roof designed by Zaha Hadid is its signature feature. Fluent, organic dome earned the stadium its humoristic nickname of “vagina stadium”. While the comparison made headlines, it’s only a sign of how iconic the new stadium will be.
Al Wakrah Stadium is also the only football stadium designed by Hadid to actually be built, even if the late architect couldn’t live to see it delivered.
