Bilbao’s San Mamés was among the best ranked stadiums in our Stadium of the Year competition in February 2015, now Spain’s most modern stadium was selected as the best sports building of 2015 during the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
This selection was made by a jury of international architecture specialists and San Mamés joins other landmark stadiums from around the world. Previous winners in this category involve Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Singapore National Stadium and FNB Stadium in Soweto/Joburg.
Also recognized this year was the ongoing transformation of London’s Olympic Stadium. While extremely controversial for its financial side, the reconstruction represents a huge challenge architecturally, especially after initial legacy plans for the stadium were scrapped entirely.
