Netherlands: Alkmaar another stadium to go solar

AZ Alkmaar join the effort to supply clean energy. Their stadium could be able to supply 125 households with solar power.

As the club officially confirmed today, AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar will become a major solar farm locally. It will provide some 250,000 kWh annually, equivalent of power consumed by 125 households. The clean energy will far exceed AZ Alkmaar’s needs on weekdays, though on matchdays the stadium will still rely on the local grid due to increased consumption.
The project will see only one stand covered in batteries, but it’s the best one to use. Roof over the north side of AFAS Stadion is almost perfectly oriented towards the south, giving optimal conditions to collect solar energy.
Altogether there will be 1,725 panels placed on top of the stadium, all installed by Sunprojects and manufactured in China by Hanergy. Financial model is secured by Rabobank, the city of Alkmaar and Energy Valley foundation. A rendering of the stadium after works are complete can be seen below:
