The empty and now-ramshackle Pontiac Silverdome is for sale again. Owners Triple Investment Group are asking $30 million for the dilapidated structure. It’s a high price for something they themselves paid $583,000 back in 2009. But then again, the stadium offers 127 acres (or well over 500,000 square meters) of space in well commuted area.
The large plot has been on the market for a couple weeks now, according to the Detroit Free Press, and has seen high interest from investors. Over two dozens of inquiries and two solid offers were submitted so far.
The stadium is in no state for renovations as these would be extremely costly. Especially since the 2013 accident that saw roof ripped to pieces. Since then weather destroyed vast spaces of the dome’s interior.
Triple Investment’s initial plan did consider a revamp of the stadium, but despite some investment it makes no sense economically to try and run the stadium. Most likely scenario is thus complete demolition if an agreement is reached with buyers. Currently only extreme sports performances like that below can be seen taking place here:
Silverdome is vacat since the Lions abandoned it in 2001. The 80,300-capacity stadium previously hosted NFL and FIFA World Cup games, along a wide variety of other grand events. It had cost the Pontiac municipality $55 million to build back in 1975.
