HNTB is to take up where Future Cities left – there’s a general concept of planned changes, but no detailed design. The renowned architecture office will now work on documentation for the removal of northern upper tier at Sun Devil Stadium and thorough revamp of facilities underneath the stands.
The plan is indeed thorough, as it includes reconstruction of all concourse levels, restrooms, concessions and creation of new club levels.
A new illuminated external wrap is also planned for the building, dressing up the old structure (parts dating back to 1958) in a modern skin.
The north end is already closed off and capacity is thus down by some 5,400. The upper tier will be removed to create an open premium terrace with two-sided giant screen.
The entire project is estimated to cost $225 million and will be carried out by joint forces of Hunt Construction and Sundt Constriction. Works will be ongoing along regular stadium use and are expected to last until 2017.
