FC Groningen and the 1 Miljoen Watt foundation launched a campaign enabling individuals to buy a solar panel that would be later placed on the roof of Euroborg. Overall the stadium is capable of supporting 1,200 such panels, of which 531 have so far been sold.
The mounting of first batteries began yesterday and is expected to end in January, when the devices will start delivering power for the Euroborg stadium.
The entire idea is based on recent energetic agreement that enables people who have unsuitable home roofs (due to shape or architecture) to buy room for solar panels atop other buildings, like schools or, in this case, stadiums.
The power generated by such battery isn’t supplied directly to the household, but to the building it’s supported by. To assure that owners of the panels aren’t losing on that solution, FC Groningen will pay them dividend for the power supplied.
