England: Anfield Road Stand with half the roof - Liverpool construction report Ten years ago it was decided that Liverpool FC would stay at Anfield. Now work is well underway at the 19th century venue and the end of the season means work on the site is intensifying. What changes can be seen at The Reds' stadium?

Removing the roof over the Anfield Road Stand

Monday marked a landmark moment in the Anfield expansion as the first major section of the Anfield Road Stand was removed. Less than a week after the last game of the season was played, the Anfield pitch was therefore hosting heavy machinery instead of Premier League footballers. The first section of the roof has been removed and is now on the pitch, ready to be cut into smaller sections and removed by the Kop corner. The second half of the roof is also being removed starting this week, after which we will really see the scale and size of the new 16,000-seat stand.

In total, that will be 7,000 more fans of The Reds at Anfield - a giant two-tier stand will be very impressive. The increase in capacity will help meet ticket demand to some extent and is expected to support the club to achieve matchday income in excess of £100m over the next few seasons. In addition to the roof, exterior painting work is underway and brickwork is almost complete. Inside, teams are fitting out hospitality areas and fan conveniences.

Liverpool's plans for the break before next season

Construction will continue throughout the summer and The Reds have asked for their first game of next season to be played away from home to allow adequate time for the redevelopment to be fully completed. Counting from the match against Aston Villa, which was The Reds' last home game of the season, four weeks have been set aside for the roof work. Once the old canopy has been removed, work will focus on connecting the new and existing stadium structure.

Vice president of stadium operations Paul Cuttill said: I must point out that the Premier League has not yet confirmed this. However, if it is approved, we will play our first home game of the new season around August 19 already with the Anfield Road stand open. We were on time and we were within budget. It has been an incredibly difficult task to get to this point and we have four weeks after our last home game when we take the roof off and that will be another milestone. We need to reach it to move forward and make sure we're on track in time for the start of the season on 2023/24.
